Big feelings are not the problem
Emotions are information.
The trouble starts when they show up all at once, stay too long, or push you into choices you regret later.
Emotional regulation means having more options once the feeling shows up. You still get to feel it.
What it can look like
Sound familiar?
- Going from fine to flooded fast
- Saying or doing things you regret in the moment
- Shutting down or going numb
- Feelings that take hours or days to settle
- Relationships that keep hitting the same wall
- Using food, scrolling, substances, or anything else to make a feeling stop
How I approach it
Skills you can actually use
I borrow a lot from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). We practice the skills in session instead of only talking about them.
Skills we might work on
- Noticing and naming emotions earlier
- Distress tolerance for getting through a crisis moment without making it worse
- Emotion regulation for lowering your baseline over time
- Interpersonal effectiveness for asking for what you need
- Mindfulness, without needing to become a monk
This is DBT-informed individual therapy. It is not a comprehensive DBT program with skills groups and phone coaching. If you need that level of support, I will help you find it.
Acceptance and change can both be true
Your feelings make sense.
And you can still learn new ways to respond to them.

Common questions
Is this the same as DBT?
It uses DBT skills in individual therapy. A full DBT program includes more parts, like weekly skills groups. If that is what you need, I will be straightforward about it.
Are you going to tell me to just calm down?
Never. Nobody in the history of humans has calmed down because someone told them to.
Ready when you are
Book a time on my scheduling page. It works the same way whether you use insurance, Medicare, or pay privately, and you can add your insurance when you book. Questions first? Call 754.400.0824 or send me a message.
What it costs: your plan’s copay or coinsurance if I am in network, 20% after the deductible with Original Medicare, or the private pay rate. See costs
For the curious
Want to nerd out on the research?
You do not need to read any of this to start therapy. It is here if you like knowing where things come from.
